Tradespeople working on an electrical installation for a Rega client

Demand

Google ads for contractors.

Someone typing your trade and your town into Google has already decided to hire. Paid search is how you get in front of that person today rather than waiting to earn the position.

Businesses we have worked with

  • Duradek
  • Siteline Deck and Rail
  • Northwest Drainage Solutions
  • IronOak Developments
  • Key and Lock Solutions
  • Forest City Eavestrough
  • Sterling Excavation
  • High Line Tree Service

The short answer

What are Google ads for contractors?

Google ads for contractors are paid search listings that put a trades business at the top of the results when someone searches for the work, charging only when somebody clicks. They reach people already trying to hire, which is why they suit urgent jobs and cost more per click than social advertising does.

What actually decides it

Five things decide whether paid search pays.

Four of them are about what happens after the click.

  • Somebody answers the phone. Paid search sells urgency, and urgency does not leave a voicemail.
  • The page the ad lands on is about the thing they searched for, not your home page.
  • The job is worth enough to survive a click that costs several dollars.
  • The wrong searches are excluded, deliberately and continuously. That is most of the work.
  • You can tell which calls came from it, or you are guessing about the only number that matters.

What happened for two of them

Real businesses, real windows.

Both of these ran Google campaigns alongside the rest of the work. Each figure is what that business sold in the window stated, with more than the ads in play: Northwest Drainage had the website, the brand and the ads from us, and Forest City Eavestrough kept its own website and had the ads and the lead handling. It is not what a business like yours will sell.

Where this sits

Paid search buys the position. The rest of the build is what makes it worth having.

You can run ads on their own and we will run them. What decides whether they pay is mostly what happens in the thirty seconds after the click.

  1. What it buys

The top of the results for the searches that matter, today, with the wrong ones excluded and the cost per job watched rather than the cost per click.

  2. Where it lands

A page about the job they searched for, with the number one tap away. A home page makes the visitor do the sorting, and most will not.

  3. What it is not

It is not a substitute for ranking. Paid stops the day you stop paying, and earned position keeps working, which is what the search work on the site is for.

Before we write a word

We write down how you talk. Then we write everything else.

We write one of these for every client. We sit down with you, listen to how you actually describe the job, and write it down. Your site, your ads and every follow-up get written from it, which is why they sound like you and not like an agency wrote them.

The work

Sites we built, and what we did on each.

Every one is a real business, not a template with a logo dropped in. We have built for deck and rail, eavestrough and septic companies, and the trade decides the language and the photos. The system underneath is the same one every time.

Before you ask

What owners ask us about paid search.

Should I do this or SEO?

They are not alternatives so much as different speeds. Paid search is live the day it is switched on and stops the day it is switched off. Ranking takes months and keeps working after you stop paying for it. The usual order is to start with paid to get calls now and build the search work underneath it, so the paid budget can come down later rather than being permanent.

Facebook or Google?

Google reaches people who have already decided to hire someone. Facebook and Instagram reach people who have not thought about it today but will need you eventually, and build recognition while they wait. Urgent work leans to Google. Work someone has been putting off leans to social.

Clicks cost a lot in my trade. Is it still worth it?

Sometimes not, and we will say so. A click costing several dollars is fine against a four-figure job and ruinous against a small one. The arithmetic is the same as any advertising: what a job is worth, how often you win one, and what the clicks cost to get there.

How do you stop the budget going on the wrong searches?

By excluding them, continuously, and by watching what people actually typed rather than what the campaign was set up to match. It is unglamorous and it is most of the job. An account nobody is excluding from is an account paying for job seekers, students and people in the wrong city.

Will you guarantee me leads?

No. Nobody honest will. What we will tell you before you spend anything is whether we think your job size and your area can carry paid search at all.

What happens to a call once it comes in?

It lands in one place with every other enquiry, on your phone, and it is attributed to the campaign that produced it. That is what makes the next month's decisions something other than a guess.

The next step

See what it costs.

Three systems, every price on the page, and what is in each one. Paid search can be bought on its own and we quote it, but it pays best with the page it lands on and the system that catches the call, which is what a system is.
